Frequently asked questions

Reclaimed scaffolding boards are old wooden planks previously used on scaffold structures. They exhibit a naturally weathered appearance with slight marks like notches, paint residue, splits, and cement but are still usable for a variety of DIY projects. This inherent wear provides character and lends them to a desirable rustic aesthetic.

The reclaimed boards we supply are typically around 38mm in thickness and 225mm in width. Lengths are available in the following increments: 3ft, 4ft, 5ft, 6ft, 8ft, 10ft and 13ft.

To promote sustainability, retired scaffold boards are often given a second life. Their durability and accessibility make them a popular material for DIY projects, ranging from furniture and decking to garden beds, shelving, and flooring. Purchasing reclaimed timber is an eco-conscious way to acquire materials with distinctive character while helping the environment.

Restoring weathered scaffolding boards for stunning home and garden features is a rewarding DIY task. This guide outlines the steps for successful restoration; however, before starting, you should carefully inspect the boards for:

Rot: Look for soft spots or a musty odour, indicating potential decay.

Damage: Check for significant cracks, splits, or warping that could affect structural integrity.

Infestation: Identify any signs of insect activity, such as small holes or sawdust.

Cleaning:

Remove loose debris with a stiff brush or scraper.

Clean away dirt, old paint, and surface grime.

Sanding:

Begin with 60-80 grit sandpaper to remove old paint and rough spots.

Then, progress to 120 grit for smoothing.

You can finish with 220 grit for a polished surface.

Ensure you sand evenly, following the wood grain, using a sanding block or orbital sander.

You should then remove dust after each sanding stage.

Finishing:

Rustic look: Apply clear wood oil or wax to enhance natural grain and imperfections.

Polished look: Use wood stain for colour, followed by varnish or lacquer for protection.

Outdoor use: Apply a weather-resistant sealant or paint for protection against the elements.

Reclaimed boards are celebrated for their authentic, rustic look. You can expect to see charming imperfections like nail holes, chips, splits, and saw marks, all telling a story of the timber’s past. Tailoring the look is easy; simply choose boards with the desired character, trim the ends to remove the banding, and then sand and wax as required. While we select flat boards, minor imperfections are part of reclaimed timber’s appeal.

Reclaimed timber is highly appealing due to its sustainable nature, making it an eco-friendly choice for DIY enthusiasts. Old scaffold boards’ versatility, affordability, and the unique, nostalgic character they embody make them a compelling alternative to freshly cut timber.

There are many advantages to using reclaimed scaffold boards, including their blend of environmental, aesthetic, and practical benefits. They’re an eco-conscious choice, reducing deforestation and resource use. These boards offer a unique, weathered look that adds character to any project, from flooring to furniture. Their inherent durability, often surpassing new timber, ensures longevity. Finally, while the initial cost might be similar to new wood, their long-term value and potential to enhance property aesthetics make them a wise investment.

Reclaimed boards are an eco-friendly material for DIY enthusiasts as their use promotes sustainability by:

  • When used, they divert wood from landfills, reducing waste.
  • They reduce the demand for newly felled trees, preserving forests.
  • Reclaimed boards minimise the energy required for processing new lumber, thus lowering carbon emissions.
  • They contribute to a recycling economy.
  • They help to remove carbon.

Reclaimed scaffold boards unlock a world of creative possibilities, blending practicality with rustic charm. From sturdy decking and fencing that enhance your outdoor living to bespoke furniture that adds character to your home, these boards are incredibly versatile. Transform your garden with durable planters, raised beds, fencing, decking, borders, seating, tables and stylish cladding, or create functional shelving, bookcases, worktops, coffee tables, bedframes, flooring and feature walls indoors. The possibilities are truly endless, making reclaimed timber a valuable resource for both DIY enthusiasts and seasoned professionals.

Protect your scaffold boards from splitting by taking these essential steps:

Dry them thoroughly, let them acclimate to your local climate, and then seal them with a moisture-resistant product.

Reclaimed timber is not inherently prone to rapid rot. Proper maintenance is key to longevity. The type of treatment needed depends on the boards’ intended use: outdoor applications require waterproof staining, while indoor use may benefit from oiling, waxing, or varnishing.

Cutting reclaimed timber to size is easily accomplished with either a handsaw or a circular saw. Remember to always prioritise safety by wearing appropriate protective gear, such as safety glasses and hearing protection.

Upcycling scaffolding boards means taking a used or discarded board and giving it a new, functional purpose. This process not only diverts waste from landfills and promotes sustainability by reusing existing materials, but it also unleashes creativity. By reimagining the board’s purpose, you can create unique, personalised items, all while saving money compared to buying new timber.

Each used board we sell is made from European whitewood timber, which is taken from silver fir or Norway spruce trees. The wood that comes from these trees has excellent durability. We can confirm that all of the timber boards we supply our customers with have been sustainably sourced and are FSC and PEFC-approved.

Yes, they are very safe for use indoors, but it’s important to remember that these boards are not kiln-dried, meaning they’ll retain a relatively high moisture content. This can lead to movement and potential warping indoors if they have not been dried out thoroughly before use.

Yes, scaffolding boards are an excellent choice for garden beds. Unlike reclaimed railway sleepers, which sometimes contain harmful substances like creosote or tar, reclaimed scaffold boards are untreated.

Yes, used scaffold boards can be a much cheaper flooring alternative as you can typically cover a lot more ground than for the price of standard floorboards. If you’re willing to put in the DIY time and effort, the results can be impressive.

Yes, each reclaimed board is sold with metal banding at each end.

Clout nails or staples secure the steel banding to the end of each board. A hammer’s claw will remove them quickly; however, you should remember to wear safety gear, as the bands can be sharp.

Our boards are supplied untreated and have not undergone any tanalisation process.

The lifespan of scaffold boards used outdoors depends on whether they are treated or untreated. Untreated boards typically last around 5 years, whereas treated boards can last up to 15 years before replacement is necessary.

No, we do not erect scaffolds; however, London Scaffolding Contractors and West Sussex Scaffolding are scaffold erectors who purchase boards from us on a regular basis and are highly recommended.
